Abstract:
Subtitling is only one of the forms of language transfer in television, cinema, and video. This contribution consists of four parts. First, we define the nature and the different types of subtitles. Then, we consider the emergence of subtitling and its various technical achievements, before dealing with the process - taking into consideration the constraining factors, the stages of the work, the strategies available to subtitlers, and the design of subtitles. The last part sums up the different parameters related to quality.
